DC is patrolled by a large number of specialized police departments.
One that I was not aware of until today is the National Zoo Police. You can imagine my severe disappointment when I saw that the patrol car was not being driven by a uniformed rabbit.

@rmondello I signed up for a year of NordPass and then was immediately blocked from using with work machines due to security policy. NO VPNs. Which is enforced by blocking the authentication websites for VPN services. NordVPN uses the same authentication site for NordPass so blocked. I was advised to use s service that did not offer a VPN service as well 🤦♂️🤦♂️

@adamgreenfield I'd be interested if someone points you in the direction of such thought. Makes me think of Honest Eds here in Toronto. It was a hugely successful business, actually, but Ed catered almost exclusively to the poor and to new immigrants. It's hard to describe, but it was a department store w/ a dentist, language services, etc., all as cheap as humanly possible. Dude could have been Sam Walton, but just stayed weird & local. (His kid wants to be a proper magnate, though.)

I hate with a passion any kind of reporting that describes problems among teenagers as caused by "screen time". It depicts it as some kind of flaw among young people who deliberately spend too much time on their phones.
Call it for what it is: abusive practices by a handful of tech corporations. They profit from products deliberately designed to create addiction, and particularly so among children and teenagers.
Stop blaming victims and start blaming the perpetrators.

@vapaad for sure!! This is the first hike I've ever been on with her where I was nervous she was just in running shoes, feet slipping a bit more on stones than I would have liked. 😭
I wanted my waterproof/resistant boots (in addition to my everyday merrell hiking shoes) for bad weather mainly (I've gotten wet feet so often in the first couple of months it's warm enough to hike, and all my footwear ends up covered in mud lol), but also so that I could increase the difficulty of the hikes I do over the coming years and get the grip and ankle support I wanted.
But that's a good thought, I'll tell my friend to check sales on trail runners as well as traditional hiking shoes!
@idzie @vapaad I made the switch from big heavy waterproof hiking boots to barefoot trail runners (altra lone peak I think) a while ago and I have zero regrets. Especially for backpacking it makes a huge difference not carrying all that extra weight, but even just for day hikes I love them. Just walking through puddles and streams and let my feet dry out as I keep walking is wonderful

In our experience so few of these crawlers/scrapers obey robots.txt or have any inclination to use resources efficiently.
@ExasperatedOf numerous social web services (including us) have frequently been bombarded with millions upon millions of hits from various LLM scrapers. Costs us money, and slows down the service. Incredibly annoying.
